VI PEEL

Nuance Facial Plastics is proud to offer the VI Peel, which is a medium depth chemical peel designed to focus on skin rejuvenation.  Advantages of the VI Peel are that it can be used on all skin types to treat issues with aging or thinning skin, age spots or sun spots (solar lentigines), and skin pigment issues such as melasma.  This is a great option for patients with darker skin, as many of the deeper chemical peels can be risky in this population.

What Should I Know Before My VI Peel?

The VI Peel is a medium depth chemical peel that gets the best results when combined with optimal pre-treatment.  We recommend pre-treatment with tretinoin (Retin-A), hydroquinone, and vitamin C serum for most of our patients to prime their skin before the peel.  The VI Peel itself is a relatively quick procedure, but the procedure itself is just the beginning of your journey.  Please bring a large hat to your treatment, as we cannot apply sunblock immediately after the VI Peel is performed, so barriers are our best option.

What Should I Know For My VI Peel?

The VI Peel has a numbing agent in it, and we also use a Zimmer chiller (a device that blows freezing air) to keep your face cool during the treatment.  Come to the office with a clean face, and we will clean it further with cleansers to remove the oil prior to applying the peel solution.  Once all of the solutions have been applied, the procedure is complete!

What Should I Do After My VI Peel

There is no washing of the face or applying products for the first 4 hours after the peel is performed, preferably longer than this.  There are detailed post-care instructions and products provided to you after the procedure, so you walk out of your treatment with everything you need to know and do.

The first two days after treatment, there is a skin reaction taking place, but it is not very visible to the outside world.  Most people can continue their regular day to day activities during this time.  Three and four days after the treatments is when the peeling of the skin peaks, with many patients shedding “sheets of skin”.  This can continue for a couple more days in some people.  As the skin peels, it is replaced with newer, healthier skin.  During this time, it is important to continue doing the post-VI Peel skin care regimen with the provided products.

Given the timing of the peeling, we typically try to schedule treatments on Wednesdays so that the peak of the peeling takes place over the weekend.

After chemical peels or laser resurfacing procedures, it is important to know that though your skin may look healed after the procedure, that you are still healing and that your skin is still sensitive to the sun’s UV rays.  That is why resuming sun blocks with the highest SPF, and reapplying after 2 hours will give you the best results.  Typically, medical grade skin care products can be restarted one week after the VI Peel.

Combining the VI Peel With Other Treatments

The VI Peel works well with a comprehensive skin rejuvenation plan, which is tailored to the patient’s needs.  For example, some patients see great results when microneedling is combined with chemical peels, while others may be better served by alternating Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) Photofacials with chemical peels.  Every patient’s goals, availability of downtime, and preferences are used to create an ideal plan tailored to their needs.

What if I Don’t Have the Down Time For a VI Peel?

We offer many different options for chemical and laser skin treatments at Nuance Facial Plastics.  For a shorter downtime, a Weekend Peel with the erbium laser is a great option, as are our more superficial chemical peels.  This can limit the downtime to the weekend in a more predictable way so that the chances of interfering with work are decreased.

I Have Done the VI Peel, and Now I Want A More Extensive Procedure

More extensive skin resurfacing procedures at Nuance Facial Plastics include the fractional erbium skin resurfacing, as well as the Obagi Blue Peel.  Both of these options do resurfacing at a deeper level with more downtime, but also with more dramatic results.
